typical puerto rican meal
The sound of frying like a downpour after a long dry spell, when it starts raining hard right away instead of building up to it, a sudden onset and the sound those raindrops make on the metal casing of my window air conditioner. I love to sleep to that sound, let sleep pull me back into its embrace. Now the smell of chipotle in adobo sauce warms the air and I feel a warmth inside of me that feels like the bright light of the kitchen next to the dark outside the windows. It feels like home and belonging.
Note: For those who don’t know, I recently got a roommate, a Puerto Rican friend of mine. He has really warmed up the place, especially the kitchen when he cooks! And the table is used for something besides setting things on. When his daughter comes over, it feels even more homey. Since he’s been here, we have decorated the place more with our things, and keep it pretty tidy and functional!

Hello again, and welcome back to the continuing adventures of me. Glad you could come on this journey with me. Let’s see what I have for you today. Well, first of all, a picture of my panther, Marko, and his sharp baby teeth!
Awww isn’t he just ferocious? Or maybe just sleepy, who can say…
Marko has discovered that dropping his toy mouse on my head from the ledge over the bed is an effective way to wake me up in the morning. Haha. As long as it’s not a real mouse, were okay.
Today I went shopping in the strip a bit. I’ve been going to Labad’s, which is a store run by two Syrian brothers. Today I got Bulgarian feta, bulgar wheat, and sour cabbage leaves. Rado is going to make stuffed cabbage leaves. It’s like stuffed grape leaves, only better.
I went to Petco to get a bungee leash to walk Marko, I’ll let you know how that progresses. He’s still getting used to having the harness on for a little bit at a time.
Today I walked two dogs at the humane society, Candy and Moose. Candy was really slender, but I have a feeling she’ll put on some more weight quickly, because she loved the treats! She was a little shy and reserved, but very well behaved and stayed close to me the whole walk. Moose is a rottweiler mixed with something with longer fur. He is a big lap dog. I sat down on a bench and he immediately hopped up into my lap. All four legs. I’d say he weighed at least 55 pounds. He was so affectionate though, it was nice to have him on my lap for a little while. I can’t find his info up on the WPA Humane site- will check again later. John Elliff, if you read this, I thought of you and your late Moose when I had him out today.
- CANDY – ID#A107277
- Sex: spayed female,
- Breed: Pit Bull Terrier.
- Age: 2 years and 1 month old.
- Weight: 48 pounds.

My day has been packed full and it is only 2:45 in the afternoon! Working my way backwards, I watched Rado play accordion for the neighbors; bought a suit, a hard rock cafe bear, and some espresso cups at the NEIGHBORHOOD YARD SALE; ate the most delicious bbq at Wilson’s Bar-B-Q; and walked five dogs at the humane society.
The dogs I walked today, you have already met, but let’s spend some more time with them, shall we?
King and Dreamcicle: Roomates
after a big wet kiss
I was surprised to see that King now has a roommate, Dreamcicle! So first I took King for a walk, and then I came back and took Dreamcicle.
I am King
Next, I fulfilled my promise to Muffin to take her on her own walk, and we went all over the place to make up for walking just in the parking lot with Ricki the other day. When I took Muffin back, I got her roommate Ricki to go for a walk.

Then I decided to walk Buddy. He was sleeping on his cot when I went into the run, and rolled over so I could rub his tummy as he woke up. After that, I was covered in sweat and dog slobber and decided to call it a day.

Keyes was hanging outside, and he looked so handsome in a tuxedo bow tie and shirt collars, and a crystal studded red harness that I just had to take a picture! Somebody give this dapper dude the home he deserves (possibly a mansion)!

Yesterday I explored The Good Life Market at the Banksville Shopping Plaza on Banksville Road. It was recently reaffirmed that I have insanely high cholesterol, so I thought I’d see what they had in the way of whole grains and other foods my nutritionist had suggested. The nutritionist especially recommended whole grains, things high in fiber, and things with “the good fat” as I call it (mono- and poly-unsaturated, omega 3 fatty acids, etc…the stuff you get from almonds, fish…). The young woman who was working there was very knowledgeable and very helpful. I didn’t use one of the available buggies, because I thought I was “just looking” so I had quite an arm load by the time I was done. In toto:

Couch Surfing is an international network that facilitates cultural exchange. If you are traveling and need a place to crash or someone to show you around or give you advice, CS is for you. The site is not just about accommodation (most of which is freely offered by individuals), it is about creating a better world. CS’s official goals include to “create educational exchanges, raise collective consciousness, spread tolerance, and facilitate cultural understanding.” The third Sunday of every month the Pittsburgh CSers hold a Pot Luck for area CSers, visiting CSers, and friends. This Sunday it was held at my friend Miriam’s apartment near me, so we decided to go. Food included quiche, taco dip, mousaka, tarator, kebabs, Shepard’s pie, spinach dip, breads, curry, green cheesecake (for st patty’s day), bunt cake (with green icing), and more. It was awesome to meet people who are different from me, but so similar in their world view. The word “potluck” is derived from whatever you are lucky enough to have in the pot. I feel lucky to be a part of a melting pot of people from around the world who are both different and the same.

We’re ready for the Super Bowl! Although I have to work right up until kick off, I prepped my stomach with a black and gold spread– gold butternut squash soup with black calamatta olives! and of course…. the Eat’n’Park Pittsburgh Steelers Smiley Cookies, which will be present today at the White House Super Bowl Party!
Bob Casey (D).
