There is a great article on the ASPCA website about the basics of dog walking. To break it down even further, here is my summation in list form.
What You Need to Walk a Dog
- Leash- retractable leads are best for parks or open areas where the lead won’t get wrapped around anything and there’s room to explore. chain leashes are heavier than nylon or leather, but can be useful for a dog who bites the leash. leather leashes are easier on your hands than nylon.
- Poop bags- always bring extra. You can use your old grocery bags, or, one thing the Humane Society has found useful–the bags the morning newspaper comes in.
- Water- Good to bring for long walks and/or when it’s warm outside.
- A Good-Mannered Dog- teach your dog how to meet new people without jumping on them, not to pull the leash and not to eat flowers.
The ASPCA article also talks about ideas to try new places for walks and to walk with other people and dogs. They also go more in depth on many things, so be sure to check it out!
